Missing Socks? 5 Uses For The One That Didn’t Get Away

We’ve all been there, you’ve finished the laundry and are putting it away only to realize that you’re missing a sock.  What’s the environmentally friendly thing to do with the one that’s left behind? Well, use it of course!

With Little Pumpkin Doodles socks I’ve managed to hold on to them by safety pinning  them together, but hubby and I are always missing one because we’re both too lazy to use the safety pins.

1. Dusting – I use a thick sport sock for this-just get the sock damp and dust away. When you’re finished you can put it in the wash and use it again.

2. Cleaning the tub – Add white vinegar and baking soda to make a paste and it’s just as good as the leading brand bath scrub without the strong bleach smell.  If you can’t handle the vinegar smell, add 2-3 drops of orange essential oil. It leaves the tub spotless.  Click here for more uses of vinegar and baking soda.

3. Stuffing for my purse – Fill a plastic bag with old socks and it works perfectly for retaining the shape and structure of your purse once your finished carrying it.

4. Travel – I recently went to New York and took a couple of mismatched clean tube socks and stuffed them with snacks, like fruit and snack bars. Of course, if you find that nasty, just put the food in a Ziploc bag before putting them in the socks. I placed the socks filled with fruit and placed them in my tall boots and packed my bag. When I arrived in NYC I saved money, ate healthier and avoided the hotel fridge with my secret stash.

5. Hand puppet – Grab a felt tip pen and draw a face and you’re ready for a puppet show.

Do you have any great environmentally friendly tips for the use of old or unmatched socks? I’d like to hear from you.

Thank you for the great tip. Here’s another one: when traveling I take an old sock, cut it down to size so that its small enough to pin to the inside of one of my garments to hold my cash. It works better than the expensive travel wallets.

  2. Great idea for travel with the sock Immacula.
