Your Baby Knows What You’re Eating

It’s Monday already and only 17 days until the first official day of summer! I’ve been in vacation mode since Little Pumpkin Doodle’s Nanna left two weeks ago. This past weekend was busy; we spent time working on our little herb garden adding Cilantro and Lemon Balm while hanging out with great friends.

I recently read an article that explained that your baby knows what you’re eating before they’re born. The gist was that a baby’s taste buds are more developed before birth since your little one is getting their nutrients from the umbilical cord and amniotic fluid. Could this be why Little Pumpkin Doodle likes pickles so much? Could the reason why I like ice cream so much be because my mother ate it all during her pregnancy. Heck, I don’t even know if that’s true, but it sure sounds like a good excuse.

After reading the article I went back and watched a Dr. Oz episode, which featured the appropriate amounts of sugar, fiber, etc. that we should be eating per serving, and decided to look at the organic products I was purchasing for our family. Since I’m trying to wean myself off of sugar and don’t want LPD to have the same struggles with sugar that I do, I decided to do some investigating in our cupboards.

Since LPD and I love Chocolate Cheerios I switched to Cascadian Farms since the brand was organic, so here’s how it stacked up next to  Dr. Oz’s recommendation:

Recommendation                                            Cascadian Farms Organic

less than 480 mg of sodium                                95 mg sodium

more than 2 grams of Fiber                                 3 grams fiber

less than 4 grams of fat                                        .5 grams fat

less than 4 grams of Sugar                                    8 grams sugar (twice the amount, but LPD gets 1/2 cup vs 3/4 cup serving)

The Cascadian Farm brand stacked up great except for the sugar content. I’m going to continue to purchase it for LPD and I but will continue to watch the portion. So in order to continue to feed our family organically I have to read my labels more carefully regarding sugar content.
